The UK's Finance and Health ministers, Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid have resigned from Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government. Both are key members of Johnson's Cabinet and their resignations are major blows.

Sunak and Javid both wrote letters to Johnson, which were posted on social media almost simultaneously.

Although they thanked Johnson, and noted the achievements of the government during the COVID-19 pandemic, they both cited the scandals surrounding No.10 Downing Street in recent months as the trigger for their resignations.

"The public has a right to expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously… I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning," wrote Sunak.

It has become clear that our approaches are fundamentally too different

In his letter Javid said he was "privileged" to have worked as Health minister in Johnson's government, and listed his achievements in that time.

Javid added that while he sees Johnson as a friend, the country must be more import. "When made to choose between those loyalties there can only be one answer."

The resignations of two of Johnson's top team come amid revelations that the PM promoted Chris Pincher MP despite knowledge of sexual misconduct allegations and reports against him. It also follows the scandal surrounding parties at Downing Street, Johnson's residence and office, during COVID-19 lock downs.

Could Boris Johnson be removed from power?

Under the rules of the Conservative Party, after winning a vote of confidence last month, Johnson cannot be challenged from within the party again for another year. However, there has been speculation that the rules could be changed, such is the level discontent from members in his own party.

The prime minister could be overthrown by a vote in parliament, but the Conservatives hold a comfortable majority, and many of their MPs may be unwilling to risk handing power to the opposition in order to rid themselves of Johnson.

Finally, Johnson could resign, especially if his cabinet unite against him. However he has repeatedly refused to consider this option... so far.
